We all know plastic is polluting our planet. But did you know that plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues facing our planet today?
Each year, we produce 300 million tons of plastic. About 8 million tons of that ends up in our oceans – where it does serious damage to marine life.
So what can we do about it?
Here are some simple things you can do to make a difference in the fight against plastic pollution:
1. Say no to single-use plastics.
This is probably the most important thing you can do to reduce your plastic footprint. Whenever possible, say no to disposable plastics like straws, coffee cups, water bottles, and shopping bags. Bring your own reusable alternatives with you instead.
2. Recycle.
We know, recycling can be confusing. But it’s important to do it right, because otherwise, your recyclables can end up in a landfill. Make sure you’re recycling properly by checking with your local recycling guidelines.
3. Avoid microplastics.
Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that can be found in many personal care products, like exfoliating scrubs and toothpaste. These products often end up in our oceans, where they’re swallowed by marine life. To avoid microplastics, look for natural alternatives to these products, or ones that are labeled “microplastic-free.”
4. Support plastic-free initiatives.
There are many initiatives working to reduce plastic pollution. You can support these initiatives by spreading the word, volunteering, or donating.
5. Vote with your wallet.
Support companies that are working to reduce their plastic footprint. And avoid purchasing products with excessive packaging. Every time you buy something, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want to live in.
You can make a difference in the fight against plastic pollution. Every little bit counts. Start with these simple steps and see how far you can go!
