We all know water is essential for life. But did you know that almost 70% of the world is facing water scarcity? And by 2025, it’s estimated that 1.8 billion people will live in countries with absolute water scarcity, and two-thirds of the world will be facing water stress.
We can all help preserve water. Here are 9 ways to get started:
1. Check for leaks
A running toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water per day. That’s enough to fill up a bathtub! Regularly check your pipes and faucets for leaks and have them repaired as soon as possible.
2. Invest in a water-saving shower head
If everyone in the US swapped out their shower head for a water-saving model, we could collectively save 2.5 billion gallons of water per day. That’s a lot of water!
3. Don’t let the water run
When you’re brushing your teeth or washing your hands, turn the faucet off while you’re lathering up. You’ll save water and energy in the process.
4. Fix leaks ASAP
A small drip from a worn faucet can waste up to 20 gallons of water per day. So if you have a leak, fix it right away!
5. Don’t water your lawn
Lawns are a huge water waster. In fact, they use up to 10x more water than native plants. If you have a lawn, consider swapping it out for drought-resistant plants.
6. Collect rainwater
You can use rain barrels or other containers to collect rainwater, which can then be used to water your plants.
7. Use a broom
When cleaning your sidewalks or driveway, use a broom instead of a hose. You’ll save water and your arm will get a workout.
8. Wash your car less often
Washing your car uses up to 50 gallons of water. If you can, wait until it rains to wash your car or wash it at a car wash that recycles water.
9. Educate others
Spread the word about water conservation. The more people that know about the water crisis, the more likely they are to take action.
